Miss T. Hutchison - Head of Drama
Miss T. John
Drama lessons take place in our brand new State of the Art Theatre which was completed in the summer term of 2015. The Theatre hosts a flat level performance area, fixed seating, and a mezzanine for sound and theatrical control. The department also has exclusive use of an adjoining well- equipped studio comprising of hung lighting, adjustable staging, theatre curtains, white board, sound system and an extensive costume and props store.
The department performs regularly, not only within the school but at professional Theatres as part of festivals, such as the Shakespeare School’s Festival and the National Theatre New Connections Festival. We also enter students into the Performing Shakespeare ESU competition, annually. We pride ourselves on producing original and challenging work; it is a reputation we are keen to enhance and expand. The normal academic year sees the production of a major musical which involves students from each year group as well as smaller performances.
We run a Key Stage 3 Drama club which enables students lower down in the school to come together to interact with their peers, develop their skills and collaborate to create original work.
Pupils are taught in mixed ability class groups at years seven, eight and nine. As well as teaching and developing performance abilities, the Drama department aim to instil students with confidence and team working skills that will be transferable in other subjects and outside of the classroom.
Teaching provision is for one period (50 mins) of drama throughout each key stage. Monitoring is weekly with one final individual practical assessment at the end of each unit. The students are set a homework task once every half term
