Enrichment

Enrichment at St Mark's Catholic School
At St Mark’s, we believe education is about far more than academic success. Inspired by our Catholic ethos and Gospel values, we are committed to developing the whole person and creating opportunities for every student to grow in faith, character, confidence and aspiration.
Our enrichment programme plays a central role in this mission. Through a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to discover new interests, develop talents, build meaningful relationships and contribute positively to the wider community. We believe every student should have access to experiences that broaden horizons, nurture individuality and help them fulfil their full potential.
Our enrichment offer is designed around five key areas, ensuring students can access a rich and varied range of experiences throughout their time at St Mark’s. Below is just a flavour of some of the opportunities available across the school.
At St Mark’s, we are proud of an enrichment programme that is ambitious, inclusive and carefully designed to ensure all students can participate and thrive. Through these experiences, students develop the confidence, resilience, cultural awareness and leadership skills needed to flourish both in school and beyond.
Civic Engagement
We are committed to developing active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities and wider society. Students are encouraged to engage with issues of justice, leadership, advocacy and service through opportunities such as the Fairtrade Challenge, Faith in Action activities, Anti-Bullying Week campaigns and CAFOD initiatives.
Students regularly develop their confidence and communication skills through experiences such as the Rotary Public Speaking Competition, the Year 10 Speak Out Challenge, VERDICT: St Mark’s Law Society and the Sustainapod “Speaking for Tomorrow” public speaking competition hosted at Imperial College London.
Our Catholic ethos is central to this work, encouraging students to live out Gospel values through compassion, leadership, service and a commitment to the common good.
Arts and Culture
Students are encouraged to develop creativity, cultural understanding and artistic expression through a vibrant programme of artistic and cultural opportunities. A flavour of these opportunities includes Drama Club, Orchestra, String Ensemble, Senior Choir, Film Club, Art Club, Creative Writing Club, Book Club, Philosophy Book Club and the St Mark’s Journalists Club.
Students also participate in performances, exhibitions and celebrations including the Advent Carol Service, Diwali Celebrations, Cultural Day, the Advent Fete, school productions and the St Mark’s Art Exhibition. Opportunities such as the School Magazine allow students to take responsibility for generating content, writing, editing and designing publications for the wider school community.
Educational visits and partnerships further enrich students’ cultural experiences beyond the classroom. Students have opportunities to visit the British Film Institute to explore film studies and identity through cinema, attend events linked to the London Symphony Orchestra and participate in initiatives such as the Hounslow Teen Read Ceremony and the Anthea Bell Translation Prize supported by University of Oxford.
Nature, Outdoor and Adventure
Outdoor learning and adventurous experiences help students build resilience, teamwork and independence. A flavour of these opportunities includes retreats, leadership experiences, outdoor team-building activities and participation in the The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme.
Students also take part in experiences such as the Hi5 Watersports leadership trip, where newly elected Sixth Form student leaders work together through activities including banana boating and team challenges designed to strengthen communication, resilience and teamwork.
These experiences encourage students to step beyond their comfort zones, develop perseverance and strengthen relationships with others.
Sport and Physical Activity
Sport plays a significant role in school life at St Mark’s and promotes teamwork, commitment, discipline and wellbeing. Students can participate in a wide range of sporting opportunities including boys’ and girls’ football, basketball, netball, cricket, athletics, running club, rounders, Gaelic football and badminton.
Our inclusive approach encourages participation at all levels and creates opportunities for students to develop physically, socially and emotionally whilst building confidence and a strong sense of belonging within the school community.
Wider Life Skills and Personal Development
Our enrichment programme also prepares students for future success through opportunities that develop leadership, independence, academic curiosity and career readiness. A flavour of these opportunities includes Science Week Supercurricular activities, The Brilliant Club, St Mark’s Scholarship Lectures, the UK Maths Challenges, the Senior Maths Challenge and a wide range of academic clubs including Games Club, Chess Club, Junior French Club and Read, Mark, Learn.
Students benefit from careers education and employer engagement opportunities including BBC Bitesize Careers Day, mock interviews, Post-16 interviews, Into Sixth Form Day, Life After St Mark’s talks and partnerships with universities and employers. Students also participate in competitions and programmes linked to organisations such as Imperial College London and Royal Holloway, University of London.
Educational visits allow students to connect classroom learning with the wider world. Examples include visits to the Bank of England, the BMW Group Mini Factory and Brompton Bikes, where students gain insight into economics, business operations and real-world industries.
Students are also supported to develop essential financial literacy and independence through workshops delivered in partnership with Wize Up and the Jack Petchey Foundation, covering topics such as student finance, pensions, tax, budgeting and managing money responsibly.
