Free School Meals

From September 2026, free school meals in England have expanded so that all children in households receiving Universal Credit qualify, regardless of household income. 

New Eligibility Categories

Benefits-based free school meals are now split into two main groups: 

• Targeted Free School Meals: For households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less (plus legacy benefits like Income-Related ESA or Asylum Support). 

• Expanded Free School Meals: For households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings above £7,400. These children qualify for the free meal only.

 

There are now two ways to apply for Free School Meals
